Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food. New data showing a sharp decline in iPhone shipments due to weakness in China is unwelcome news for investors in Apple. Sluggish iPhone sales this year have been well documented, and they're the reason Apple shares have fallen roughly 9% in 2024. First-quarter numbers from International Data Corporation (IDC) show the extent of the weakness, with iPhone shipments dropping 9.6% year-over-year to 50.1 million units — its sharpest year-over-year loss out of the top five smartphone brands. That put Samsung back in first place for phone shipments, after Apple held the crown for all of 2023 . We certainly didn't want to trade Apple and Nvidia – the Club's two 'own it, don't trade it' stocks – as so many did. You think and think and think, and you still can't believe that things changed so radically in such a short period of time. So, let's pull apart Apple, Amazon, Meta and Alphabet to try to understand how unimportant what actually happened at these companies might be. Instead, Apple stock has climbed roughly 5% since it reported quarterly results on Nov. 2. Meta stock fell to $288 a share, down from $314, in a couple of sessions just because of that line in its earnings report. But like Apple and Amazon, Meta stock stabilized and has risen more than 14% since late October.

This holiday season, shoppers who ring up purchases on credit cards will pay more interest if they carry balances from month to month after the Federal Reserve's string of rate hikes. Already, investors and retailers have paid closer attention to credit card payments — and some have cited them as a concern. The company, which has its own branded credit cards, has seen lower revenues from those cards because of costs associated with bad debt and related write-offs. Mitchell said student debt, auto loans and mortgages have all become bigger burdens in a high interest rate environment. For retailer-issued cards, the average interest rate is nearly 30%, a record high, according to data from Bankrate.

Jim Cramer has some simple advice for investors trying to make sense of the latest Apple (AAPL) news going into next week's earnings: Don't panic. State media Global Times reported on Sunday that Chinese authorities are investigating key Apple supplier Foxconn. It's just the latest in a string of negative headlines for the tech giant in China, its third-biggest market. However, Apple stock was still nearly 9% below its Sept. 5 close, the day before the Journal report. Instead of trading on speculation, however, we will listen to what management says about Apple's AI efforts during next week's earnings call.

This week's rare Wall Street downgrade of Apple (AAPL) is the perfect example of why we don't try to time the stock market. If sold some Apple at the open on Wednesday at $171 on fears of a sell-off, we would have been sorry. Trying to sell a stock higher with the intention of buying it back lower is a difficult game. To better illustrate this thinking, we ran a few scenarios around a 1,000-share position in Apple with a hypothetical sale price of $171 per share and a $161 repurchase price. Your profit on 900 shares would be $30,600 at a $205 stock price.

In March 2022, Nazım Salur invited thousands of Getir employees to a Zoom meeting to celebrate its newfound "decacorn" status. However, as soaring inflation and rising interest rates began to hobble the tech sector, investors became far less forgiving of businesses that had oriented themselves more toward growth than sustainability. In December 2021, The Guardian reported that Getir had offered customers a deal where they could get £15 off if they spent £16. About 21 rapid-delivery startups were operating across Europe in 2021, with Getir joined by the German outfits Gorillas and Flink, as well as the British startup Zapp. Getir tentatively emerged as the winner in the rapid-delivery sector when it bought its main competitor, Gorillas , in a heavily discounted deal for $1.2 billion in December.
